Five Best Sites to Pick Up Skills

Growing up, I’ve always been a fan of school and learning. When I was young, my dad used to really push the importance of education and of course- getting good grades (typical “asian” stereotype lol). Now don’t get me wrong, I was definitely not a 4.0 student, but I would say because of the extra attention to “education”, it really did open a new door and excitement when it came to learning. Whether it was doing random workbooks, playing computer math games/video games, I truly found it enjoyable to learn new things. At one point, I even contemplated on being a teacher… Yikes!

Fast forward to college, I had a passion and drive to pursue Graphic Design. Going to class and learning new techniques didn’t feel like work to me. I was determined to better my craft and learn new skills and trends to become a better designer. I then picked up my first Marketing/Graphic Design internship and I knew I found what I wanted to do. Learning how to speak to different audiences, create plans for engagement, and most importantly seeing if it worked was super satisfying. Digital marketing and designs forever-changing and keeping up-to-date can be difficult. While many of you aren’t in the same field as me, I think we can all relate when I say we always want to learn something new, but sometimes don’t know where to start or may not have the funds to get there. Here are some free/cost-effective tools I’ve personally used and found useful. With everything going on, there are even discount codes to these helpful websites!

Lynda.com

Price: Free for the first month then $29.99/mo

Lynda.com is limited to the skils you can learn. It’is more focused on business, software, technology and creative skills. Below are just a few of the courses they offer:

Skillshare.com

Price: 2 months for the first month then $19/mo or $99/yearly

My personal favorite! I love the interface of Skillshare and there is a wide variety of courses. Their platform ranges from photography, business, design, writing, and event lifestyle. You also have a personal profile where you can share the skills you learned with your followers.

YouTube.com

Price: Free or $11.99/mo for Premium

Good ole’ YouTube. You can’t go wrong with learning something new from YouTube. Best part is… It’s free!

Wikihow

Price: Free

Yes, random, I know. I didn’t want to leave this one out though! Wikihow makes my list for a simple and biased reason. I love how easy it is to follow along and  of course the images! The graphics make it extremely easy to figure things out ;)

Google

Price: Free

Oh man, if I could get a dollar for everytime I used “Google” as a verb… I’m pretty sure I’d be a millionaire. I Google EVERYTHING and tbh, it’s definitely a time suck for me when I’m trying to learn something new. So many resources… I love it! As many like to say… When in doubt, Google it!

Happy learning, everyone!
